The fishing opportunities are endless with many different species on offer. Experience some action packed popper fishing for some of the speedsters of the ocean such as giant trevally (GT’s), queenfish and mackerel, try jigging for coral trout, mangrove jack, red emperor, tricky snapper, golden snapper, long-nosed emperor, cod, chinaman and the mighty black jewfish or try light tackle game fishing for northern bluefin tuna, sailfish and black marlin. To target the ever popular barramundi you will fish around the mainland coastline where rocky headlands, mangrove lined flats, creeks and estuaries provide the perfect fishing grounds. Other species such as blue and threadfin salmon, mangrove jack, golden snapper and QLD groper can also be caught in these systems. With only two metre tides the water clarity around Groote is superb and provides some excellent grounds perfect for fly fishing enthusiasts. At the end of each day the boats will be moored near the jetty and you have a short stroll back to your room to freshen up before dinner.

Tours

The Sportsfishing Lodge offers 3-7 day fishing packages. Shorter tours are designed for those needing a quick fishing fix with limited time. Longer tours are the preferred choice providing anglers with the opportunity to experience a lot more of the area and providing a chance to add-on other activities like, enjoying a round of golf, relaxing in the pool, experiencing a cultural tour with a traditional owner or simply getting a full on action packed fishing adventure. Entry to Groote Eylandt is restricted to guests holding a permit issued by the Traditional Owners.

Tour Package includes

Location

Groote Eylandt is the largest island situated in the Gulf of Carpentaria, 630km from Darwin by air. The island belongs to the Anindilyakwa people, and is part of the Arnhem Land Aboriginal Reserve. The island is approximately 50km east to west and 60km from north to south and has an area of 2687 square kilometres.

Tackle

Quality Shimano fishing tackle will be provided for all guests on a replace if lost or damaged basis. Shimano tackle has been selected to cater for all types of fishing at Groote Eylandt. Strong, reliable tackle is essential! Some fly tackle will be available, however anglers may prefer to bring their own favorite customised outfit.

Lodge and Accommodation

Located on the northwest side of the island, the Sport fishing Lodge will provide guests with a unique, remote experience with excellent facilities and unforgettable fishing. The purpose built lounge area with spacious deck has been designed to showcase this beautiful, pristine environment. The comfortable internal lounge area is a great place to enjoy a drink, share fishing stories or view a slide show of the day’s events. From the deck guests will have uninterrupted views extending across the beach to nearby Connexion Island and beyond. Sit and enjoy the spectacular sunsets after a memorable day of fishing. The Lodge can accommodate up to 24 guests in twin or double share accommodation. The safari style Lodge accommodation is raised, ensuring minimal impact on the environment, fully air-conditioned with ensuite facilities, mini bar fridge and tea and coffee making facilities. Each room boasts a private deck area with stunning water views.

Meals and Refreshments

All meals and light refreshments are included in your package. Lunch, morning tea and light refreshments will be supplied on the boat each day. Breakfast and a two course dinner will be enjoyed in the restaurant at Dugong Beach Resort. The island has a strict alcohol policy and guests will not be allowed to bring their own alcoholic beverages. Please advise us of any special dietary requirements or medical conditions.

Dugong Beach Resort and Other Activities

All facilities at the Dugong Beach Resort including the restaurant, licensed bar, pool, conference room and business centre will be available to guests of the Escape Sportfishing. After a day chasing sportfish why not come home and relax in the Dugong Beach Resort pool before heading to the Licensed Bar for refreshments. Groote Eylandt has a well maintained 9 hole golf course that can be used by guests of both the Lodge and the Resort during their stay. Golf clubs will be available for hire and a small fee will apply.
